Performed in Cantonese and English
Chair Spin draws inspiration from the artist’s personal experiences in pole dance practice. Set against the stigmatised and sexualised histories that shaped its contemporary forms, this work confronts the institutionalisation and desexualisation of pole dance — from strip club innovations to athletic reinvention — as it evolves into an Olympic sport and a global fitness trend. Through examining its layered legacies, The Artist reveals the politics embedded in the dance form via embodied aesthetics and personal practice, reconnecting with its early pioneers through every encounter with the pole.
Momentary Echo
Sica Ho Tsz Kwan
Breath wanders consciously beneath layers of skin.
The body carries the weight and memory of all that I have lived.
When I observe this body, what do I see?
When you witness my dance, what do you perceive?
Shifting Still
Ching Chu
Shifting Still takes the established image of the sensual female body as its starting point. Through repetition and subtle shifts in movement, the work gradually destabilizes the prescribed notion of the female as object. By reclaiming repetition as an act of the subject, the choreography opens up possibilities for redefining and rewriting this image, revealing the fluidity of the female body between gazing and interpretation.
