In 2024, Unlock brings ‘Body In Time’, a project targets the seniors, to Sha Tin district. By exploring the theme of "Square Dancing" (a popular group dance activity in public spaces), the project invited seniors to rediscover their bodies through innovative choreographic approaches. Beyond mimicking dance steps, the emphasis was on fostering a sense of autonomy and freedom in movement.
The project also investigated square dancing as a social phenomenon: How do the groups of middle-aged and elderly participants form and sustain themselves? What environmental factors support their growth? How do these groups operate and express themselves? What drives seniors to join such communities?
This year, the project continues to use “Square Dancing” as a lens to examine how collective consensus, musical resonance, physical synchronicity, and shared living experiences can strengthen group cohesion and cultivate shared values in a community*.
*Traditionally, a "community" refers to a group of people interacting within a shared geographic area, united by common values or collective identity.
Unlock organizes a series of activities, we aim to unite seniors in their communities and inspire holistic well-being through dance.

About 18dART
Art is just around the corner.
Since 2019, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has introduced the "18dART — Community Arts Scheme" bringing the performing arts to each of Hong Kong's 18 districts. Under 18dART, artists are able to put down roots and focus on their creative practices. Through sustainable, stage-by-stage arts activities which are at once interactive and participatory by nature, 18dART sets out to not only make a positive impact on participants, but to develop community arts programmes that belong to each district.
