#danceless camp 2024: Teaching Artists in Community

Building on the success of its 2021 and 2022 Children Creative Movement Forums, Unlock Dancing Plaza has shifted its focus to practicality for this year's #danceless camp to nurture, gather and connect local artists who teach dance. During the four days of camp, the emphasis will be on artistic creativity, performance and openness to foster close interaction through a series of engaging workshops, observations, performances and interactive roundtable discussions. We have invited two overseas dance groups to share their respective experiences in teaching as an artistic practice within different cultural contexts.

This year's theme is "Teaching Artists in Community", and three forward-thinking dance groups that collaborate with community members will share about "bodily knowledge":

  • Unlock Dancing Plaza's "Body in Time" thoughtfully introduces creative dance to the senior citizen community, starting with bodily perception, then establishing rules and concepts of bodily movements and finally experiencing autonomous body movements in improvisation and performance.
  • Namstrops, a Japanese dance group, regularly integrates creative dance into school physical education classes, co-creates dances with elementary students and innovatively extends creative dance and performances beyond traditional theater spaces.
  • Ergao Dance Production Group in Guangzhou seamlessly blends dance and “bodily knowledge” into various subjects, intervening in body interactions through visual arts and media like moving images.

Throughout the diverse experiments of these three artistic groups, the primary focus is on showcasing interesting aspects of body creativity and performance. Professionals in body movement, physical development and community arts as well as the general public are invited to exchange ideas and best practices during the four-day camp. Let’s plant seeds of exploration in various corners of the community as we collectively delve deeper into the human body, connect the mind and body and unleash our imaginations!

Ergao Dance Production Group
Initiated by Er Gao in 2007, Ergao Dance Production Group (EGDP) is a contemporary performance organization based in Guangzhou, China. EGDP have constantly seen body as the core of artistic investigation and the objects of creation, using diverse strategies - theatre, film and video, site-synthetic, community dance, etc. to illuminate Chinese social and cultural identities, sex, gender and other topics in absurd and grave way. Meanwhile, it's also a document library of films and body, which roots and grows in self-expression and local narratives, giving artists in southern China a space for transit and exchange.

The representative works include the Butterfly Island, Disco-Teca, Kung Hei Fat Choy series, This Is A Chicken Coop, Southern Dance House (a community dance project) and so on.

Namstrops
Founded in 2006, "namstrops" is a dance company that creates new value by considering things from a reverse perspective. They have presented their works in 40 cities across 15 countries, including the prestigious Sibiu International Theatre Festival. Since 2016, they have been collaborating and co-creating with Unlock Dancing Plaza. They were finalists in the Yokohama Dance Collection in 2008, 2011, and 2012. In addition to domestic and international performances, they conduct workshops and corporate training sessions based on their practical research in "SOUSAKU-DANCE," catering to both children and adults. In 2019, they opened the "International Children's and Youth Theater Miyazaki" in Miyazaki City. Starting in 2023, they began producing "The Sky is Vast! Miyazaki International Dance Festival."
